VERY SCARCE DIMINUTIVE DOUBLE-SIDED CAKE BOARD SOLD
American, possibly New York City, ca. 1840. Carved from heavy
mahogany, this cake board (called cake print in period) was likely
carved by John Conger or one of his contempories. It would have
geen used to decorate the top of a cake on a holiday, such as New
Year's Day. Heavy mahogany held up well with repeated washings.
Similar carving and weight to signed Conger boards I have owned,
yet this example is only 7 5/8" x 6 1/8" x 1" thick, and is imaged on
both sides, with a horse carved on one side, and a complicated nest
with birds scene on the reverse. Carved on the edge in period
initials "FLB". Excellent condition, dry surface.
