High Character Pedestal Compote
Probably New England, ca. early 19th century.
Appears to be maple and pine, in a combination of dry original paint and rich natural patina. The broad base supporting a double-knopped column topped by a canted open box, the box corners with complex dovetails, which would have taken a skilled woodworker to make. The box has a chamfered rim and is joined to the column by wrought nails. The surface quality is exceptional. Stands tall and straight, a couple of later reinforcing nails added, and a crack within the interior of the box. About 14 ¼ inches tall, the base diameter 7 7/8, the box rim 6 ¾ square and 3 inches deep. Shown with pine cones and composite fruit, yet could present well with many real fruits or objects. It's cool.
