"His Cyphering Book" 1789
Probably Northeast, signed Joseph Rex, dated 1789, ink on laid paper. Dozens of pages showing not only Joseph’s mathematics problems workflow, but also showing off his beautiful calligraphy, in essence a period art form. Other signatures on the front may be of approving instructors, and also includes Willoughby M. Rex (perhaps the father). With considerable wear, yet an intriguing accessory to place on a period tavern table or desk as a window into rigorous 18th century mathematics education and thought. About 13 inches x 8 x ½.
