Painted Looking Glass

Probably Northeast, likely New England, 18th century.

Original black paint decoration on red ground, on mixed soft woods that appear to be pine and possibly cedar backboard. Having a red ground on a looking glass is not common, this is the first I have had. Very dry painted surface.

The glass is very thin as is most mirror glass of this period. Retains original glue blocks. Although thin wood stock, remarkably no cracks or repairs. The crest decoration is of potted flowers, often a symbol of growth and prosperity, the side stiles with foliate decoration.

About 17 inches x 10 ¾.
