Scarce Small Early
Painted Firkin
Probably New England, ca. 1790–1810.
An unusually small and early example of a painted firkin, notably diminutive in scale compared to most surviving non-miniature forms. Cooper-made of staved pine with an ash swing handle.
Retains its original bone-dry, oxidized sage green paint with complex surface.
Height just 5 3/8 inches to the top of the lid.
Constructed with a mix of wrought and cut nails; the exterior fastening nails are copper, while the nails securing the handle buttons are iron.
Excellent structural condition, with only seasonal looseness to the bottom bands, and honest period wear to the paint as shown.
From a New York State collection.
Small scale + original paint + early construction = a scarce trifecta
